School Notes ¯

Kurzweil Club-We will hold Kurzweil Club this Thursday May 8 and next Thursday May 15 at 8am!  We will meet in the computer room.  We really need your help, so we hope you can make it.  Thanks!

Newman’s Own Grant & New Books- We just received a check from Newman’s Own for $35,000 which will help defray the cost of new math books for the upcoming school year. We’ll also be purchasing new social studies and religion books. Additionally, we’ll utilize some excess PTO funds from the Polar Express and Spring Auction to help with this textbook purchase!

Running Club News- Students in grades 1-4 will have Running Club today until 4:30p.m. Grades 5-8 have Running Club tomorrow until 4:30p.m. Students should wear their gym uniform pants/shorts and their Running Club t-shirt.

2008-09 Tuition- An email regarding new tuition rates was sent to you before April vacation. Your family’s non-refundable 10% deposit will be due on May 15th so please plan ahead. Look for tuition packets this week in your child’s backpack. They’ll be in a large, gray envelope. Return the colored form with your deposit by May 15th.

Grade 8 Clean Up- Grade 8 students will be raking and sweeping the school grounds this Wednesday as community service to their school. Students should wear their Class of 2008 shirts and jeans/shorts, bring work gloves and a shovel!

Dress Down Day- Student Council is sponsoring a Dress Down Day on Thursday. Voluntary donations of $1.00 will be collected.

Field Trips- Students in kindergarten will attend a Tom Chapin concert this Friday at UMass Lowell. Grade 5 will attend a trip to the USS Salem on Friday. All students need an official SMS permission slip to attend.

Deficiency Reports- Grade 8 Deficiency Reports were mailed home last Friday. This Friday, reports will be mailed to grade 6 & 7 students.

Middle School Dance- Students in grades 6-8 are invited to attend the Summer Fun Dance on May 16th from 7-10p.m. We are looking for donations of snacks, drinks and paper goods. A form was sent home last week. Permission slips will be distributed the week of the dance. The cost is $5.00 and a canned food item for the food pantry. Those parents who would like to chaperone must have completed a CORI and taken the PGC workshop. Please send in the form from last week if you wish to donate any items or chaperone.

Play News- We had 3 outstanding performances of SHREK this weekend. Congratulations to the amazing actors, singers, dancers, narrators, stage crew, etc. for a job well done!

AM Care- If your family will be in need of AM Care from 9a.m.-11:45a.m. next year, please send a note into the office. We do not normally offer any AM Care but are open to the possibility of offering some type of program, not a drop-in program like our current Ext. Day Care, if there is a need.

Half Day May 7th- Please mark your calendars for a half day of school on May 7th. Dismissal will be at 12:15p.m. for all grades (including AM sessions of nursery, pre-k and k). This is a town-wide early dismissal day so buses home are available. Kindergarten students are able to ride the bus home with their siblings on the same bus they rode to school on.

Informal Uniforms- Skorts are not part of the SMS uniform. Although you may see them at the uniform store or at your local department store, they are not considered SMS uniform and should not be worn in replacement of shorts/pants/jumper/skirt.

Spanish Extra Help for Grades 6-8- This is a reminder to parents and middle school students that Mrs. Reardon will be offering an extra help session this Wednesday, May 7th at 8:15AM in the computer lab. Please let her know if you plan on attending.

Hood Milk Caps - If your family buys Hood milk, please keep saving the caps from the Light-Block bottles. We are able to submit all of them (not just the ones with the Red Sox logo), so please keep sending them in!

7th Grade Parents - Our 8th Grade students will be graduating on Thursday June 5, 2008. I am looking for approximately ten moms/dads and ten students to arrive around 6:30 p.m. to set up, serve during the reception and clean up after the reception. Last year the 7th graders were able to watch most of the Graduation from the upper balcony then pour/serve drinks and help with the clean up at the end. I would appreciate your consideration in helping with this year’s Graduation. Please call or email Karin Devlin (978) 469-0366 or kpldevlin@comcast.net if you would like to help.
