The SMS Spring Arts Festival Q & A

The 2008 Spring Arts Festival will be held on the evening of Wednesday, May 21.
It will begin with the Band Concert and be followed by the Art Exhibition which will be featured in the first floor of the school.  The evening will end with a presentation of awards to the first prize and honorable mention winners in each grade.  The following are a list of frequently asked questions regarding the visual art portion of the festival.  If you have other questions not included here, please contact Mrs. McArdle.

Is all the art being exhibited eligible for an award?
Only art submitted by individual artists will be considered in the contest portion of the program.  Other art projects completed in school by the entire class are not subject to judging but provide examples of art from all students.

How is the art judged for the contest?
Three people who have no ties to the school are recruited to help review the art submitted by individual children in all grades (N-8).  They are given a score sheet to review each work on aesethics, originality and skill level.  Once completed, each child’s scores are tallied and the top scores receive awards.

What are the changes for this year’s contest?
Work submitted for the contest portion are required to have been completed outside of St. Michael.  For example, they could have been done at home, an after school art program, etc.  This encourages students to create something over and above their regular class work.  We are also looking at expanding winner categories to include 3 categories for awards in drawing, painting and 3D work in order to re cognize all the various ways students express themselves.  There will be more classroom work from the younger (N-8) and middle school grades (not subject to judging).

How do you determine the number of awards in each grade?
This is done proportionately according to the number of entries per grade.  All grades receive first prize awards and the number of honorable mention winners reflects how many students participated in each grade.

I didn’t receive a registration form.  How do I get one?
Art Exhibition registration forms are available on the school’s website.  Please read all of the requirements in terms of size, materials and source.  If work is not completed according to these, it will be returned to you.

When is the contest art due?
Tuesday, April 29.  Please submit work to the art room on Tuesdays, Wednesdays or Fridays.

How can I get involved?
Just let Mrs. McArdle know you’d like to join the Art Show Committee.  We are looking for people to help with refreshments, mounting and hanging art work and acting as hosts the night of the show.  This is a fun way to help showcase the many talented students at St. Michael.
