U MATTER
Objective
For every member of the St. Michael School community realize that THEY MATTER. Goals In keeping with the Mission of Saint Michael School, particularly carrying on in the spirit of faith and love of the Sister's of Charity, the U MATTER Movement seeks to:
  • Encourage SMS students to be friendly and respectful in their thoughts, words and deeds at school, home and in the community.
  • To nurture the development of new friendships among SMS students.
  • To cultivate inclusiveness and foster sense of belonging with school community among every SMS student.
  • To inspire random acts of kindness throughout our school, homes and communities.
  • To cause members of our school community to feel respected, valued and realize how they MATTER.
Something to Think About
On the first day of the school week, after morning prayer, students will be read an inspirational thought or message to ponder for the week related to kindness. There will be a follow-up on Fridays.
Kindness Pledge
The following pledge will be recited by students each morning:
I pledge on this morning, as I begin this school day.
To be thoughtful and kind in all I do and I say;
To treat others with respect, as I'd have them treat me;
To be the kind of person God wants me to be;
To do one good deed, and to all, be a friend;
And to tell someone they matter before the day's end.
Visuals
U MATTER logo is present in several locations throughout the school. Brightly colored shirts with the U MATTER logo have been created to be worn by faculty and staff on designated days to serve as a visual reminder.
Kindness Chain
Strips of paper will be placed in each classroom and initially sent home with each child. Acts of kindness will be recorded on strips and collected in the classroom. Links will be assemble and hung in each homeroom. At a date/time/event to be determined, classroom chains will be combined into a giant chain that will hopefully large enough to wrap around the school or extend from the school to the church. To keep track of acts of kindness and encourage friendly competition, large U's will adorn the Maple Street atrium. Acts will be tallied each week and teams will earn a handprint for every 25 Acts of Kindness completed. Prizes, to be determined by Mrs. Gosselin (and selected by the Team), will be awarded each (and every time) Team fills their "U".
U MATTER Minutes
A St. Michael School has its own on-line news show, the U MATTER minute. Each week a student reporter will fill you in on "5 Things U Need to Know." Be sure to check the website weekly for the latest edition.
First Friday Masses:
The Mass Celebrant will incorporate the U MATTER Movement into his Homily and/or closing remarks at each First Friday Mass.

We have many more ideas to keep this program fresh and exciting. Throughout the school year we will be providing you with suggestions to "maintain the movement" in your classroom. We also welcome and value your comments and any suggestions you may have to make this program successful! Please reach out to us.

Thank you for making a difference each day for our children. Please know how very much U MATTER to us!

With warmest regards,
The U MATTER Movement Coalition
