National Junior Honor Society
The St. Michael School National Junior Honor Society is a duly chartered and affiliated chapter of this prestigious national organization. Students in the third term of the sixth grade or grades seven and eight are eligible for membership.

National Junior Honor Society is more than just an honor roll. The Honor Society chapter establishes guidelines for membership that are based upon a student’s outstanding performance in the areas of scholarship, service, leadership, character and citizenship. These criteria for selection form the foundation upon which the organization and its activities are built.

Scholarship
Students, who have a cumulative grade point average of 94 percent, meet the scholarship requirement for membership. These students are then eligible for consideration on the basis of service, leadership, character and citizenship for NJHS.
Service
Service is when you have given of your time voluntarily to your classmates, your school and/or your community to help other people. You do not expect nor will you accept money. You want to help others enthusiastically without recognition. You are very dependable and well-organized. You work well with others. You help your teachers without complaint. You participate in activities outside of school such as Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts or working with the elderly, poor, or disadvantaged. You show respect for all people from all walks of life. You are required to perform at least ten hours of service each year. A service form must be completed to apply. Each year a student remains a member, a form must be submitted.
Leadership
Student leaders are those who are dependable in any responsibility, have a positive attitude, and inspire others to have a positive attitude. They volunteer to help, don’t follow peer pressure, don’t bully and/or criticize others, do what is right, and is respectful of self, environment, peers, teachers and staff. Leadership experiences can be drawn from school or community activities while working with or for others.
Character
The student of good character upholds principles of morality and ethics, is cooperative, demonstrates high standards of honesty and reliability, shows courtesy, concern, and respect for others, and generally maintains a good and clean lifestyle.
Citizenship
The student who demonstrates citizenship is a well rounded student who tries hard, has a positive attitude and follows school and classroom rules. He/she is respectful of self, teachers, peers and the environment. This student understands the importance of civic involvement by participating in such activities as school clubs, scouting and community organizations.
